Lucium Topical FAQ

Get answers to your most common questions about our topicals and what makes Lucium different.

What is Lucium?

Lucium is a patented and patent-pending topical system that increases laser and LED light penetration by reducing surface and subsurface scatter.

It temporarily matches the skin’s refractive index, allowing more light to reach deeper tissues while minimizing heat on the skin surface.

How does Lucium improve laser therapy outcomes?

Lucium clarifies the stratum corneum and preserves beam collimation, helping therapeutic light reach target tissues more efficiently.

Clinics report better penetration, more consistent dosing, reduced pain, and improved overall treatment comfort.

Does Lucium work on all skin tones?

Yes. Lucium eliminates skin tone (Fitzpatrick I–VI) as a barrier to light penetration.

This makes high-wattage and high-dose treatments safer, more uniform, and more inclusive.

Can Lucium be used on tattooed skin?

Yes. Lucium dramatically reduces scatter and thermal buildup over tattoo ink.

This makes both contact and off-skin laser applications safer and more effective for tattooed areas.

What’s the difference between the Contact-Laser and Off-Skin formulas?

The Contact-Laser formula is optimized for direct-on-skin laser therapy and provides a smooth glide.

The Off-Skin formula is designed for tattoo removal, IPL, fractional lasers, and photofacial treatments where the laser does not physically touch the skin.

Is Lucium safe for sensitive skin?

Yes. Lucium is noncomedogenic, hypoallergenic, and preservative-free.

It’s made from natural plant oils, antioxidants, polyphenols, and skin-supportive ingredients that won’t irritate or dehydrate the skin.

What ingredients are in Lucium?

Lucium uses lightweight plant oils, squalane, jojoba, grape seed, antioxidants, and polyphenols.

Both formulas are anhydrous, preservative-free, and manufactured in the U.S. under FDA and GMP standards.

Will Lucium make treatments feel hotter or colder?

Lucium significantly reduces heat on the skin’s surface by minimizing trapped light energy.

Most patients describe treatments as more comfortable with less heat, even at higher power levels.

Does Lucium reduce pain during laser therapy?

Yes. Less surface heat means less discomfort during treatment, especially at higher wattages or over tattoos or darker skin tones.

It also helps decrease post-treatment irritation because the skin barrier isn’t damaged.

Can Lucium be used with any laser or LED system?

Yes. Lucium works with all treatment lasers, PBM systems, IPL devices, and LED platforms.

It enhances light penetration regardless of device brand or wavelength.

How do I apply Lucium?

Apply a thin, even layer to clean skin before treatment.

For instructions, watch the short “How to Use Lucium” video here.

Will Lucium interfere with treatment dosing or protocols?

No. Lucium preserves beam quality and reduces scatter, allowing your intended dose to reach deeper tissues.

Most clinics find dosing becomes more consistent, not less.

Is Lucium only for pain management applications?

Lucium is used widely for pain, recovery, dermatologic procedures, wellness, tattoo removal, IPL, and fractional lasers.

Anywhere light needs to reach deeper, Lucium improves the outcome.

Can I retail Lucium in my clinic?

Yes. Clinics can order Lucium directly through the Aspen website.

If you have any issues, contact our team here.

Is Lucium available for whole-body PBM treatments?

Yes. We have a full-body PBM topical designed for TheraLight red light therapy beds. You can view or shop it here.

Does Lucium have patents?

Yes. Lucium is protected under U.S. Patent No. 947491 with additional patents pending. Its refractive-index-matched optical clearing system is the first of its kind for therapeutic light.

Who developed Lucium?

Lucium was co-developed by the founders of Aspen in partnership with LUCI Therapeutics LLC.

Together, they lead advancements in light-tissue interaction and therapeutic dosing science.

What problems does Lucium solve for clinicians?

Inconsistent dosing, excessive skin heating, limited penetration in darker skin tones, and reduced effectiveness over tattoos.

Lucium helps ensure safer, more predictable, more powerful treatments for every patient.

Does Lucium leave residue or build-up?

No. Lucium absorbs cleanly, does not clog pores, and does not affect equipment. It leaves the skin smooth, moisturized, and ready for treatment.
